Hitachi recalling 230,000 washer-dryers

TOKYO, Japan - Hitachi Home & Life Solutions Inc. said Dec. 20 about 238,000 of its washer-dryers have a defect that could cause fire. The company will check and repair these washer-dryers produced between August 2001 and December 2002 free of charge.

Japan to have another belt-tightening budget

TOKYO, Japan - Finance Ministry Masajuro Shiokawa speaks at a news conference Dec. 19 after his ministry drafted an 81.23 trillion yen general-account budget for fiscal 2002, 1.7% less than the initial fiscal 2001 budget and the smallest in four years.
